Explore the Ancient World of Encaustics and Mark Making
PAINTING WITH BEESWAX and Mark Making
Discover the magic of bees and beeswax! Learn the foundational techniques of painting with beeswax, tree resin and pigments known as encaustics. Dive even deeper by exploring the world of mark making and collage through adding alternative materials such as handmade papers, photographs and found objects you will weave together with wax to create rich, vibrant and textural images.Supplies will be provided. You are encouraged to bring personal items such as papers, yarns, threads, magazine images or photocopies of images you are inspired to work with. Wear your painting attire or bring an apron!

Instructors:
DESIREE DE MARS, has been an artist, hypnotist, shaman and integrative health practitioner for over 25 years. A former member and instructor at The Museum of Encaustic Art and The International Encaustic Artists, her passion for wax, fire and bees began as a beekeeper, many moons ago, where she lived off-grid within a sustainable artists community in northern Wisconsin, on Lake Superior. SHARON SCHMIDT is President of Cascade Girl and received her Master Beekeeper credential from University of Montana. She established the Cascade Girl organization in 2014. She is a psychiatric nurse practitioner and clinical psychologist.
ORGANIZER: Cascade Girl is a 501(c)3 nonprofit that teaches people about agricultural pollinators of the Cascade region via science, art and culture. Projects include educational content about beekeeping and gardening for US veterans, honey and hive, art and cultural presentations and classes for school children and adult students. Although we teach veterans in person these days, you can watch our video for the online course that started it all here
Cascade Girl produces the annual Oregon Honey & Mead Festival (held at Edenvale Winery on August 29, 2026 this year with tickets available on Eventbrite). Local classes such as this one help fund our work. Cascade Girl looks after Apiaries in Ashland, Grants Pass and Central Point where bees produce honey, pollen and wax.
